Outokummun kaivosmuseon uusi historiasta nykyaikaan peilaava näyttely tutustuttaa geologiaan, malminetsintään, kaivospaikkakuntien toimintaan, kaivosrakentamiseen sekä kaivosten toimintaan. Avoinna arkisin ma-pe klo 10-15, tervetuloa tutustumaan!

The Museum's history

Milos Mining Museum is located in Adamas, the harbor of the island, and its establishment aims to honor and promote the mining history of Milos and to display the island's mineral wealth.

The Milos Mining Museum was established and operates with the support of S&B Industrial Minerals S.A.

Its construction works, begun in 1995 and were completed three years later, when the museum opened its doors to the public on May 23, 1998.

Objects, pictures and photographs in the exhibition areas of the museum present the impressive geological peculiarity of Milos and narrate in their own way the mining history of the island, while, at the same time, they pay a minimum tribute to all those who have worked and are still working for the development of mining on the island, and they also connect the past to the present.

The building where the museum is housed includes the ground and the 1st floor, constituting the main exhibition areas, as well as the auxiliary rooms in the basement.

On the ground floor, the visitor gets a first contact to the mining history and activity of Milos. A series of photographs, representations and paintings depict schematically its various stages. The presentation is surrounded by old and new geological and topographical maps of the island, several authentic tools and instruments. Moreover, depictions of the current mining activity and environment restoration works are presented.

The room of the 1st floor is dedicated to the presentation of Milos' mineral wealth. Samples of minerals prevailing in the current mining activities of the island are exhibited in window-cases, accompanied by photographic material and information on their processing and uses.

The auxiliary facilities of the basement consist of one room with a 40-person capacity, equipped with audiovisual means to project videos related to the themes of the Museum and host scientific events, as well as one room for various purposes, like educational programs, special exhibitions etc.

Muuseum avati 1967. a. Linna hallatav asutus on muuseum alates 1993. aastast. 28. detsembril 2004 avati Kunda tsemendimuuseum. Muuseumis on võimalik tutvuda tsemendi leiutamise ja kasutusele võtmise looga, tsemendi tootmisprotsessiga ja Kunda tsemendivabriku ajalooga.
Muuseumikülastaja:
- saab teada, miks ja kuidas hakkas inimene ise valmistama kivi;
- mil viisil kerkisid antiiksed Rooma ja kaasaja arhitektuuripärlid;
- tutvub tänapäeva tsemenditööstusega;
- võib läbida hiigelsuure pöördahju ja kogeda tunnet, mis on klinkril pöördahjus keereldes;
- saab vaadata ja võrrelda oma käe mõõtudega Eesti kuulsuste käejälgi;
- matkata Kunda vanal tööstusmaastikul;
- näha Euroopa ainsat säilinud tsemenditootmiseks kasutatud pudelahju, Eesti vanimat hüdrojaama ning looduskaunist Kunda jõe ürgorgu.

Külastuskeskuses on avatud muuseum, 50-kohaline seminariruum, kohvik ja meisterdamistuba lastele. Pakume giiditeenust, õppeekskursioone koolidele, korraldame õpitubasid ja seminare. Giidi saatel on võimalus külastada Muuseumikoobast. 1,4km pikkune õpperada võimaldab tutvuda tüüpilise nõmmemetsakooslusega.

Külastuskeskuses saab 3D-arvutimudeli kaudu virtuaalselt jalutada Piusa liivakoobastes, vaadata filme, tutvuda liivadega lähemalt, süveneda nahkhiirte elu-olusse ning võistelda AHHAA koopamängus.

Külastuskeskuse rajamist Piusale toetas Euroopa Regionaalarengu Fond Siseministeeriumi ja EAS-i poolt rakendatavast Piirkondade konkurentsvõime tugevdamise meetmest.

Aastast 1966 tegutseb Kohtla-Järve Põlevkivimuuseum, mis on vormilt akadeemiline muuseum. Külastajatel on võimalus tutvuda püsiekspositsiooniga, mis kajastab põlevkivi, kui maavara tekkimise ja kasutamise ajalugu ning tänapäeva.

Muuseumi fondides on uurijate käsutuses üle 27000 säiliku, kus majandusajaloo kõrval on ka üle 600 kunstiteose, neist vanimad 1920-ndatest aastatest.

2006.aasta mai kuust alustati fondide digitaliseerimisega, 2007.aastal alustatakse digitaalse andmebaasi loomisega ning ilmub Põlevkivimuuseumi koduleht.

Alates 01.oktoobrist 2006.a koondati Kohtla-Järve Põlevkivimuuseumi nime alla mitmed seni eraldi tegutsenud näituste korraldamisega tegelenud üksused nagu Kohtla Järve Valge Saal (endine Linnagalerii) mille põhiülesanne on kunstinäituste korraldamine koostöös Kohtla-Järve linna Kunstnike Ühendusega ja ka Vene Muuseumi Virtuaalne filiaal, mille põhiülesanne on virtuaalsete ekskursioonide korraldamine. Hetkel videoteegis üle 50 ühiku Vene ja maailma kunstipärandist. Oktoobrist 2006 alustati valmisprogrammide tõlkimisega eesti keelde ning samas on alustatud kontaktiotsinguid teiste Euroopa muuseumidega videoteegi täiendamiseks. Aktiivselt tehakse koostööd linna koolidega ning koolide kunsti- ja infotehnoloogia õpetajatega.

Alates 2007.aastast asub Kohtla-Järve Põlevkivimuuseum Kukruse alevikus. Antud koht on sümboolne, sest just Kukrusel alustati 90 aastat tagasi põlevkivi kaevandamist ning teiseks olulisemaks faktoriks on asukoht Tallinn-Peterburi maantee vahetus läheduses.

Tuleviku suundumustes on esikohal fondide ja andmebaasi digitaliseerimine ning majandusajaloo osas koostöös partneritega mitmete virtuaalsete õppe- ja ekskursiooniprogrammide koostamine erinevates maailma keeltes.

Piusa koobaste ajalugu

Piusa koopad tekkisid 1922. aastal, mil sealset klaasliivaks sobivat kvartsliiva hakati maa-alustes käikudes kaevandama. Peale Järvakandi klaasitehase on Piusa liiva kasutanud Tarbeklaas, vähesel määral ka Meleski klaasivabrik. Liiva kasutasid ka mitmed tehased: Tallinna Betoonitehas, Ilmarine, Dvigatel, Tallinna Masinatehas jt.Peale vanade kaevanduskäikude on Piusa jaamast lõunapool geoloogiliste uuringute otstarbel rajatud kolm tehiskoobast.
Piusa liivakivi kuulub ülemdevoni Sventoi lademe Gauja kihistusse. Kõrgetes kaevanduskäikudes on esindatud kollaks- või pruunikashallide põimjas- või horisontaalkihilised liivakivid. Piusa liivas on kvartsi 94 %, päevakivi 3,6 %, vilgukivi 1,1 %, raskeid mineraale 0,1 %. On veel rutiili ja ilmeniiti.

Piusas asuvad endised kaevanduskäigud on kujunenud lendlaste ehk rahva seas nimetatud nahkhiirte talvituspaigaks. Nahkhiired on imetajad. Nad on peidulise eluviisiga ning asustavad nii loodusmaastikke kui hõreda inimasutustega kultuurmaastikke. Nende suvised elupaigad on puistutes ja veekogude ääres. Päeval on nahkhiired peidus, öösel aga sooritavad toitumislende. Nad on putuktoidulised.

Piusas asub suur nahkhiirte talvituskoloonia, mis on tekkinud pika aja jooksul. Loendama hakati neid 1949. a, siis leiti vaid 22 isendit.1994 oli nahkhiiri loenduse andmetel 2000 ja 1999. a juba 3500. Alates 1990ndate keskpaigast on piusa suurim teadaolev nahkhiirte talvitus koloonia Ida-Euroopas. Siia tulevad nad talvituma isegi 100 km kauguselt ning talvitumas leitud seitset liiki nahkhiiri: : tiigilendlane, veelendlane, brandti lendlane, habelendlane, nattereri lendlane, suurkõrv, põhja-nahkhiir. Mitmed neist on kantud Eesti punasesse Raamatusse.
Nahkhiired on looduskaitse all alates1958. aastast. neid kaitsevad ka mitmed rahvusvahelised lepped (Berni ja Bonni konventsioon, Euroopa Ühenduse elupaiga direktiiv). 1999. aastal kinnitati Piusa Koobastiku Looduskaitseala kaitse-eeskiri, mis sätestab nende kaitse talvitumise perioodil.

Piusa koobastiku looduskaitseala

Piusa koobastiku looduskaitseala on loodud kaitsmaks Piusa liivakivikoopaid kui Eesti, aga ka Baltimaade suurimat nahkhiirte talvitusala. Koopad võeti kaitse alla 1981. aastal, looduskaitseala moodustati 1999. aastal. Kaitseala pindala on 46 hektarit ja siin leidub sobilikke elupaiku lisaks nahkhiirtele ka mitmetele teistele haruldastele loomaliikidele- siin elavad kivisisalik ja koobastiku kõrval liivakarjääri tiikides mudakonn ja harivesilik.

Piusa koopad on tegelikult kunagised klaasiliiva ehk kvartsliiva kaevandamiseks rajatud käigud. Ehituselt on tegu ristuvate ning paralleelsete koridoride süsteemiga, mille käike eraldavad lae toestuseks jäetud liivakivist sambad. Siinse hea klaasiliiva leiukoha avastas 1920. aastal geoloog Hendrik Bekker. Heledat Sventoi lademe Gauja kihistu liivakivi hakati kaevendama 1922. aastal, tööstuslikult 1924. aastal Mõrsjamäest. Esialgu tehti seda maa-alustes käikudes ehk stollides, liiv veeti välja vagonettidega. Allmaakaevandus suleti 1966. aastal, kui koobastikust põhja pool avati karjäär, mille 1985. aasta toodang ulatus juba 28000 tonnini.

Bucyrus Museum

The Bucyrus Museum opened to the public in January 2009, located at Bucyrus' international headquarters in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. The Museum explores the rich heritage of the machines, people and culture of Bucyrus and its ties to the community while educating guests on both surface and underground mining technologies.

Visitors to the museum will learn about Bucyrus, its history and its equipment through multimedia presentations and displays. Memorabilia, scale product models and historic photo's from the Bucyrus archives are some of the features of the museum. Visitors will also have the opportunity to test their skills as a shovel operator in the interactive shovel simulator, see a re-creation of an early underground mine and learn more about mining and its importance to our daily lives.

Siit-sealt meediast võis mõni aeg tagasi lugeda, et novembri lõpust on taas külastajatele avatud Piusa koobastik. Kohapeal
selgus, et siiski väga suurte mööndustega.

Koopaavade ees laiutab nüüd palkidest ja klaasist maja. Sinna sisse pääsemiseks tuleb lunastada pilet. Mida siis selle eest näha saab? Väikest (ent siiski kõrgeimat ja uhkeimate sammastega) osa koobastikust, mis vägevate elektrilampidega valgustatud. Ja kõik. Liikumiseks
avatud osa on kõigest paar-kolm sambavahet. Siin siis mõned turistipildid uut moodi Piusa koobastest.

2006. aastal - koobaste remondiks sulgemise aegu - kirjutas "Postimees" viidates nahkhiireteadlasele Matti Masingule: "Koobaste käitumisreegleid kujundades tasuks eeskuju võtta Kohtla kaevandusmuuseumist Virumaal, kus kontrollitakse rangelt kaevandusse pääsevate turistide hulka ja liikumist."

Kohtla kaevanduses käinuna võin öelda, et vaatamist-käimist-teadasaamist on uutmoodi Piusal murdosa võrra sellest, mis Ida-Viru kaevandusmuuseumis. Kohtlas saab ligikaudu sama raha eest pika ja hariva ringkäigu koos omaaegse kaevandustehnika tutvustusega ning isegi sõidu allmaaraudteel.
Piusal on kaunid loodusliku valgusega vaated sammastikust jäänud minevikku, nii et fotohuvilistel seal enam suurt midagi teha ei ole. Lõviosa koobastest on külastajatele suletud ja nii ilmselt jääbki. Kuigi teadjamad (sh õnneks ka vist veel nahkhiired) teavad ka keelatud radu ametlikult mitteavatud koopa osadesse.

THE JEFFREY MINE, ASBESTOS

Since about the 1870s, the inhabitants of this area, some twenty kilometres northeast of Richmond, were aware of the strange substance which veined the rocks on a hillside known as "Webb's Ledge." It was a Welsh miner named Evan Williams, who, visiting his parents in 1881, first identified the substance as the mineral asbestos, and recognized its commercial value.

Soon after, a gentleman-farmer, W. H. Jeffrey, put up the necessary funds to start a mine on the site. A royalty of $10 per ton of fiber produced during the summer and $5 per ton during the winter was paid to Webb. The rate of production rose from one to two tons per day to an annual rate of 2300 tons by 1895, and increased considerably more in the years to come.
Mining, at first, was primitive. Asbestos was blasted and dug out manually with chisels from a shallow open pit. The first derrick used to hoist the ore was powered by a single horse. Modern production methods are, of course, more sophisticated, and operations now extend far beneath the earth's surface in a network of underground mines.
Over the years, the Jeffrey Mine has changed hands several times. It has experienced some serious economic downturns, not least of which was the result of a falling world demand for asbestos, brought on by perceived health risks associated with the mineral. Today, the mine is the property of JM Asbestos Inc. It has grown to over two kilometres in diametre, 350 metres in depth, and six square kilometres in total area, making it the largest open pit asbestos mine in the Western hemisphere.

The Town of Asbestos, which has grown up alongside the huge mine, has had large chunks of its territory swallowed up by the expanding mine. Indeed, the downtown has disappeared several times over the years.

Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) was one of the major gold mines in India and is located in the Kolar district in Karnataka, close to the city of Bangalore. It was closed in 2003 due to reducing deposits and increasing costs. The mine is considered the world's second deepest gold mine.

Gold was first mined in the area prior to the 2nd and 3rd century AD (golden objects found in Harappa and Mohenjo-daro have been traced to KGF through impurities-analyis--the impurities include 11% silver concentration, found only in KGF ore) by the digging of small pits. During the Chola period in the 9th and 10th century AD the scale of the operation grew, but large-scale mining only came in the 1850s under the British with more manpower and sophisticated machinery. In 1873, M.F. Lavelle, a resident in Bangalore, applied to the Mysore Government for the exclusive privilege of mining in the Kolar district. His request was granted and he commenced operations by sinking a shaft near Urigam (Oorgaum) in 1875, but, finding that large capital would be required he, in the following year and with the approval of the government, transferred all his rights and concessions to the late Major General G. de la Poer Beresford. Major General Beresford formed a syndicate known as the Kolar Concessionaries (now merged into the Gold Fields of Mysore Co.) which took up the matter in earnest, and gradually acquired the area known as the Kolar Gold Fields.The following were the principal Mines in the Gold Fields in 1905:- These are a few minings in this city The Mysore Gold Mine, Champion Reef Mine, Oorgaum Mine, Nundydroog Mine, Tank Block Mine, Balaghat Mine, Gold Fields of Mysore, Coromandel Mine, Oriental Mine, Nine Reefs Mine, Road Block Mine, Mysore Reefs Gold Mines Coy.

[edit]Birth of the city

The local Kannada speaking villagers refused to work in the deep pits of the mines and so people from the North and South Arcot districts of Tamil Nadu were settled around the various Shafts and a city was born. This is partially true.

Even today places in the area have names reminiscent of the presence of British people there; the two main towns Robertsonpet and Andersonpet being named after two British officers in the mines.

Also Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) an Indian Public Sector Undertaking, has one of its branches located here. It manufactures a variety of heavy equipment, such as that used for earth moving, transportation and mining. BEML incorporated in May 1964, and commenced operations on January 1, 1965. It was wholly owned and operated by India's Ministry of Defense until 1992, when the government divested 25% of its holdings in the company.

Kannada and Tamil are widely spoken by the people here apart from Telugu which is spoken by the native people. Three hundred thousand people lived in the Kolar Gold Fields at its peak production, but since the closing of mines in 2003 the population has reduced to less than a hundred thousand. Signboards are displayed predominantly in Kannada, Tamil and English all over KGF, and it is a bilingual town where people can speak three languages at ease^{[citation needed]}.

People from many different places are settled in the Kolar Gold Fields. This includes Tamil speaking people from the north and south Arcot districts of Tamil Nadu. There are also Native Telugu speaking people as well as natural migrants from neighbouring telugu speaking areas such as Kuppam, Ramakuppam, V-kota and other places from Chittoor district of [[Andhra Pradesh]. The native people of Kolar district are basically kannadigas with Telugu Influence, and who adopted telugu from the fourteenth century. Tamil populations primarily came from the British efforts to get workers for the mines and migrated from tamil nadu crossing the Andhra border into KGF. So the culture has influence of all the three states Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Given the mixture of population, many festivals are celebrated; the most famous and popular one being the Lakshmi Venkateshwara Jaatre and Mother of Mines feast.

The mining hospital has the distinction of being the best hospital in the whole of the Kolar district. A goddess temple situated near by the hospital is famous because of the legend that it was built by British personnel. The Hospital is recognized for occupational disease treatment. The Gold Company which is known as Bharat Gold Mines Limited has come out of various combinations and permutations. The company has record of having Morarji Desai as chairman of this company and some of the erstwhile chief Ministers of Mystore state as chairmen.

KGF has an Engineering College, a Dental College, a few Mining schools and number of good schools. KGF has got a medical college hospital nearby in the district Headquarters Kolar which is around 45 minutes drive from the town centre. Famous doctors in and around KGF are Dr.P.Sampath Kumar. Radiologist and sonologist,Dr.B.R. Rajendrakumar,Cardiologist & a Dentist Dr. AMC Saldhana and Naveen Kumar.

There are lot of distinguished personalities who were born in KGF but made their niche on the international scenario. One such famous personality is Prof Dr T.M. Krishnaveni. Born in the Champion Reefs area in 1939, she went on to complete her MPh from Tulane University USA and PhD from Bangalore University. She is the only person from Karnataka to figure in the UN World Health Organisation's "who is who" in the Nursing field. Currently she is guiding prospective PhD candidates in Bangalore.

Wieliczka Salt Mine, which is considered to be one of the most famous mines in the world, has its origins as far back as in the Middle Ages. The first mention of the mine can be found in the Kazimierz 'The Restorer' Privilege – document from 1044, in which Wieliczka was called „magnum sal alias Wieliczka” meaning the great salt.

Since Middle Ages salt has become an essential part of Polish economy system, while in the ancient times it was used as a legal tender. Primarily salt was evaporated from salt springs and sea water. The beginnings of the rock salt extraction on the Polish soil are unknown, however the process was probably initiated accidentally, when workers deepening saline wells came across a salt deposit.

In course of time salt became important tool of authority. In the XIV-th century benefits derived from mines performance constituted 30% of Polish Treasury incomes. Mines gave the maintenance to the king's court and several castles responsible for the trade routes protection. The Cracow's Academy (former name of Jagiellonian University) owe its existence to the salt extraction. Its founder, king Kazimierz The Great financed the entire school from the mines' revenues, while his successors as well as Polish nobles granted additional funds to its activities.
In 1368 mines' activities were specified by Kazimierz 'The Great', in a document known as Kazimierz's Charter. This law define rights and duties of particular civil servants and working groups, transactions settlements between production and Treasury, working salaries and salt retail prices. Main instrument of king's control over the mines were special commissions established to investigate the state of underground excavations, salt mines buildings, regularity of clearings with the state and to issue recommendations and instructions for miners. In the XVI-th century the Wieliczka Salt Mine became one of the greatest European businesses of its times. Apart from the crew directly connected with production and administrative workers, the mine employed carpenters, coopers, blacksmiths, carters, stables,etc.
In the middle of the XV-th century mine´s incomes allowed rennovation and further development of Wawel Royal Castle. At the same time the salt mine was deepened in search of new, bigger salt deposits. King´s supremacy over the mine ceased in 1772 when Poland´s first partition took place. During Austria´s administration new methods of extracting salt were introduced. Long Austria 's ruling period influenced positively technical condition of the mine and brought stabilization. At a time development of the Wieliczka occurred. A new power station was set in motion in the close vicinity of the mine. Furthermore, a railway was built between Cracow and Wieliczka. Excavation works were mechanized. In this process hand drills were replaced with pneumatic equivalents and a salt mill and a steam hoisting machine were set in motion. Some service workshops and joinery cooperating with salt mine were built. In 1912 a new mechanized saline was activated which after a few modifications has been operating up to these days.
Period between the World Wars brought stability and further development. The mine developed in the fields of production, healthcare and tourism. Especially healing properties of salt should be given due consideration. They were spotted in the XVI century by humanists, who claimed that salt mixed with some other substances can be very helpful in dealing with snakes' bites, eczema, ulcers, angina, gout and many other diseases. Balneology development in the XIX-th century was directly connected with Wieliczka, where in 1826 salt bath treatment was launched. Thanks to the doctor, Feliks Boczkowski, the first salt baths centre was opened in Wieliczka. The purpose of the following facility was to cure 36 different types of illnesses – from cold to infertility and from hysteria to so called 'love abuse diseases'. Healing with salt baths ceased after dr Boczkowski´s death in 1855. The revival of this idea occured in 1958 thanks to Mieczyslaw Skulimowski´s initiative (founder of the Wieliczka Salt Mine Underground Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre). Special micro climate of salt mine underground excavations enabled curing patients from following illnesses: asthma, bronchitis and allergy. After WWII, which was the period of intensified extraction and Germans' attempts to run production line for the military purposes, difficult times fell upon the mine. Exploitation of the mine central deposits, in the close vicinity of antique excavations caused the serious unbalance of a rock mass and acceleration of the tourist track area destruction. These rash actions had a bad influence on the structure of the rock mass. In the fifties, as a result of the very bad condition of several chambers visited by tourists, protecting works were commenced in the mine. At first they were financed by the Ministry of Culture. Then a special fund for protection of the Wieliczka Salt Mine was established.

Famous Diamond Mines:If you live in the United States, where the most diamond jewelry is bought every year, that diamond engagement or wedding ring that you wear probably features a diamond that did NOT come from the U.S. At the time of this writing there are no commercial diamond mines operating in the U.S. The last one that there was so far, the Kelsey Lake Mine situated close to the Colorado-Wyoming border, shut down operations in April of 2002. The most valuable diamond that site ever yielded was worth $300,000. Today, there is one non-commercial (that is, unowned by any private company) diamond mining site in operation in the U.S.: Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas. This operates on a fee-to-mine basis. There have been many famous diamond discoveries at this location throughout the decades, including the 40.23 carat Uncle Same diamond discovered at the Park in 1924. In 1990, Shirley Strawn uncovered a 3.09 carat diamond that got cut to 1.09 carats in 1997 and received a "perfect" grade of 0/0/0 by the American Gem Society in 1998, making it the first diamond ever given this mind-blowing AGS grading.
Now this diamond is on display in the state park.

However, some diamond mining companies are interested in Alaska, Wyoming, and Minnesota as potential diamond repositories.

Diamonds are mined in different ways, taking into consideration how the minerals are deposited, how stable the surrounding terrain is, and what environmentally disruptive impact mining would have.
Artisinal mining is also called small-scale mining. This is what is typically used in poor areas and the people who do the mining are called "diamond diggers" who use their hands and very basic tools like shovels and sieves to find diamonds. These diamond diggers are considered "subsistence-level" workers and are most often, but not exclusively, found in Africa.
Hard rock mining involves creating underground diamond mines featuring "stopes", or underground rooms that are supported by natural underground pillars. This type of diamond minding involves the creation of "declines" (shafts) and is achieved through a combination of manpower and advanced machinery.
Marine mining is a relatively new form of diamond mining which hasn't even been around for 20 years yet. Offshore placer deposits are mined for diamonds; huge drills up to seven meters in diameter are used to drill down into the seabed and suck up the underwater material that contains the diamonds. Remote-controlled Seabed Crawlers are also used to move horizontally along the sea floor; they pump prospective gravel up to a ship.
Open pit mining is used when the surface material, or "overburden", that covers the diamond deposits is thin and prospectors find diamonds or what are called kimberlite pipes near or on the surface of an area. A pit is dug and diamonds are extracted from it.
If diamonds are found within alluvial, colluvial, or eluvial secondary deposits, Placer Mining is used for extracting them. Hydraulic, mechanized, or artisinal mining techniques may be used for extraction.
